HISTORY OF MUSIC VIDEOS

Music videos have developed and beome a rather popular method over the years. Musicians frequently use them when bringing out singles and new songs to add to their music and make it more appealing to viewers mostly aimed at all ages. In more recent years they are now often primarily used as a marketing technique by promoting them as an individual/group in order to increase music sales. They may also be referred to 'promotion videos'.

In the early years of 1920s the first releases were known as short musical films. One of the first "talkies" to be released was Al johnson "The jazz singer" which was the first video with a duration of 4:16 minutes shown below. After this it massively had a impact against other artists and production companys wanting to also create their own short musical films.

After that around the 1950-60s more videos had been let out. One of the most different music videos was "Dame si do bytu" back from 1958 however the content within the video shows the use of creativity and handmade props being included in the video and the main focus rather than just the movement and typical scenes of people singing.

Towards the late 60s popular groups such as the Beatles started to make a lot more promotional clips due to them finishing their tours and no longer opting to in person appearances yet it enabled them to continue with their music sales and recognition. Not long after that, in early 1967 techniques used within the music videos were taken to the next level involving slow  motion, dramatic lighting, unusual camera angles and colour filtering. 

Music Television  

As the popularity of music videos kept on growing the development of music television introduced and on August 1st 1981 a channel called MTV was launched. This is where music from video jockies also know as 'VJ''s would be played enabling people to watch them. There aim was to appeal to audiences starting from teenagers through to young adults giving good entertainment and reality for them to watch. 

This opened up the 'Modern Era' which referred to new videos and ideas that are more modified and skilled being aired for the nations satisfaction.

 

From then onward several artists increased their videos leading to one of the greatest and most successful to this day of music videos to be made was Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller'. 

Thriller is around 14 minutes long displaying an entire scene leading upto the song. costing a price $800,000 to make
